As a successful Christian artist, Botticelli was taking an artistic and even moral risk in painting a huge pagan work. But he was almost certainly responding to a patron's orders. Artists in the Renaissance rarely got to choose their own subject matter, and the man who might well have been the patron of the Primavera was certainly used to having his own way. He was the ruler of Florence, and head of the mighty Medici dynasty - known to all as Lorenzo the Magnificent.
Lorenzo is a supreme example of what we now would call the Renaissance prince.
