Hundreds were killed and injured as Misratans tried to break the siege by government forces. Those fighters who died were hailed as martyrs, and those who survived as heroes. And some of those wounded survivors have surprisingly found that their marriage prospects have been enhanced, even though some have had to have double amputations.
Justin Marozzi has just returned from Libya where he's been making a documentary for the BBC's Crossing Continents programme. He told Julian Marshall about one young man, double amputee, Alibardi, who was injured during the fighting in Misrata.
"He was a very nice young man of about 24, very smiley, very cheerful who told us the story of how he'd lost both legs during the siege of Misrata when his position was hit by Grad missiles. Multiple body wounds, lots of shrapnel, one of his lungs was injured. And now almost two years later, he's getting ready to get married. "
"And not necessarily to his own urging, I understand he is being forcefully wooed by women. "
"That's right. He's shot up to the top of Misrata's most eligible young man. And you know in the Arab world which isn't generally known for its sensitivity towards disabled people, it's really remarkable that he himself is being approached by young women and their fathers, all desperate, you know, to win the accolade of getting him, you know, snaffling him up as a husband, very unusual."
