Arrivals at Heathrow, the film star Ingrid Bergman and director Alfred Hitchcock coming from Hollywood.
There were many, many errors made. The first was I say, the first was that I felt that arriving in London at London Airport with Bergman, here am I, Hitchcock, the one-time English director, returning to London, with the biggest star of the day. This seemed at the time to be very important and this is where I was juvenile and stupid.
Still wedded to the ten-minute take, Hitchcock struggled to adapt it to a sprawling costume drama.
I remember one day when I was working, Hitch stood up and said, "This film is gonna be a flop." Oh yeah. And he disappeared. This wasn't like him. And that haunted me. This film is going to be a failure. |
