The Austrian supersonic skydiver Felix Baumgartner has finally returned home, after his record-breaking leap from the edge of space.
The Austrian former military parachutist faced reporters in his home city of Salzburg. This is nearly two weeks after his plunge from a balloon to the New Mexico desert. The leap made him the first person to reach supersonic speed - without travelling in a jet or spacecraft.
A worldwide audience watched live on the internet as Baumgartner leapt into the stratosphere.
His descent lasted just over nine minutes, while his free fall was timed at 4 minutes and 20 seconds. The jump was from an altitude of 39km above the Earth.
Felix Baumgartner, Austrian supersonic skydiver, said, "Until I did the parachuting I did not know, did I break the speed of sound or not. But when I was on the ground, I was told by a couple of people that they heard that supersonic boom. And then I knew that I broke the speed of sound. I’m really happy because what we have done, working on Red Bull Stratos, we have (been) touching people’s heart(s). We did inspire the next generation and we actually accomplished something that matters to the whole world." |
