The Union and its forerunners have over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe. Shortly afterwards, the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso gave this response.
"It was with great emotion that I received the news of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union. It is a great honour for the European Union to be awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. This is indeed a great honour for all the 500 million citizens of Europe, for all the member states, and all the European institutions."“挪威诺贝尔委员会决定将2012年诺贝尔和平奖颁发给欧盟。欧盟及其先驱者在过去60年中为促进欧洲的和平与和解、民主与人权做出了贡献。在这70年中，德国和法国曾有过三次战争，而如今，这两国之间的战争已不可想象。这表明，通过目标明确的努力和建立互信，宿敌也可以化干戈为玉帛。”
