And last week, he lost his battle to ensure that someone else could kill him without being prosecuted, when the High Court in London ruled against him.
This morning, Wiltshire Police said the force would not be carrying out any investigations as the death certificate had been signed by a doctor.
Martha Kearney spoke to our health correspondent Jane Dreaper, and asked her for more details on Tony Nicklinson's campaign.
He'd had a very active lifestyle, playing rugby for example, before this catastrophic stroke. But it resulted in him being paralysed from the neck down. He could only communicate through a computer, and indeed he used that to speak very movingly about how demeaning his life had become.
He took his challenge to the High Court. He essentially wanted to be lawfully allowed professional help to die in the absence of having the physical capacity to be able to end his own life.
This would have pushed the law on assisted dying and euthanasia into very new territory. The judges rejected his request last week.
