Many Nigerians see Moshood Abiola as a hero, but thousands of students and lecturers who took to the streets earlier this summer argued that they should have been consulted first. The renaming has been suspended following a legal challenge.
Chief Abiola, a former businessman, stood for president in 1993. And it was widely assumed that he had won but then the military stopped the count and annulled the elections. A year later, when he tried to take office, he was thrown into jail. After years in solitary confinement, he died in 1998, the day before he was due to be let out. Two years earlier, his wife Kudirat was assassinated after leading the campaign for his release. Their seven children were left with the double challenge of completing their education and keeping alive the legacy of their parents.
Their eldest daughter Hafsat Abiola-Costello is well-known at home and abroad for her work on human rights and democracy. Today she's helping the Ogun State government to meet Millennium Development Goals, such as better access to health care and clean water. Hafsat is visiting Europe this week.
