Emile Hirsch and Thomas Haden Church as the hapless if grasping son and father and Matthew McConaughey as Killer Joe in William Friedkin's new film. Friedkin, you probably recall, is the American director who 40 years ago, was at the top of the go-to list after the rough and ready police drama, The French Connection, which netted him an Oscar for Best Direction and The Exorcist which ensured its place in the nightmares of two generations. Since then, he's made a dozen features, including the controversial gay serial killer thriller starring Al Pacino, Cruising, and the court-martial drama, Rules of Engagement with Tommy Lee Jones. But nothing that's attracted the same degree of praise or notoriety. Then along comes Killer Joe, not a subtle film, but arguably an impressive one. It's adapted from a play by award-winning Oklahoma-raised writer, Tracy Letts, now of Chicago's famous Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Letts also wrote Friedkin's last film, Bug. And as you can gather from that brief excerpt, Killer Joe does not shy from stereotypes, the dumb but crafty hick, the ruthless killer with the gentle southern manners and amidst the trash, the innocent girl. Or is she playing crazy? And indeed where is the good in any of these people? The whole affair is played for maximum impact in vibrant colours, cinematographed by Caleb Deschanel with a gory resolution and before that, a highly sensational scene involving fried chicken.
