But first, the relationship between the Christian church and homosexuality is controversial. The Danish parliament has just passed a law allowing gay couples to take part in full marriage services in church, but polls suggested that up to half of the priests in the main Danish church will refuse to carry out the ceremony. In America, President Obama has attracted the anger of evangelical Christians by announcing his support for gay marriage, and the issue is causing political tension in the UK.
Well, Jeremy Marks is a British committed Christian. He's spent a lifetime struggling to come to terms with the fact that he is gay. As a young man, he believed his feelings towards men were sinful and unnatural. He even travelled to America to take part in a programme to "cure" him of his homosexuality. When he returned to the UK, he set up and ran his own programme, which attempted to help other gay people to become straight. But Jeremy's now decided that his attempts to convert himself and others were a huge mistake. He started working to help gay Christians accept themselves for who they are. When he came into the Outlook studio, he told me he first realised he was attracted to men when he was a teenager.
"One of the things that alerted me to the fact that I was gay was watching a programme on TV called Dr. Kildare with Richard Chamberlain, who was a rather gorgeous-looking young doctor in the series, and then that certainly stirred me up. I then felt dreadfully guilty."
