He has promised to improve communication and to pay higher dividends in future. As we recorded this podcast, shareholders were meeting at an AGM in London. It was widely expected that around 1/3 would vote against the latest executive pay deal. Ahead of the vote, Marcus Agius is reported to have told the AGM "On some matters, we should have communicated earlier and more clearly. For this, I apologise." You'll notice he wasn't apologising for the pay packages themselves, and it was that which was widely expected to provoke a revolt among shareholders. Among them is Investec Asset Management and Max King, the investment manager of the company told Sean Lane that they'd already submitted a proxy vote in advance of today's AGM.
"We do hold Barclays shares and we've voted against the remuneration package. We do not believe the performance of the company justifies the rewards which have been offered. In fact in the words of Bob Diamond himself he just says the performance last year was unsatisfactory. And we do not think that unsatisfactory performance justifies outsize to rewards. They have introduced a condition as of last week which says that a good part of the excess remuneration will only be paid if the return on capital exceeds cost of capital.
