VechosyThe crisis in Syria has divided the major international powers, but it's galvanised regional players in a new way. The BBC's UN correspondent Barbara Plett spent years reporting on the Middle East. Now she goes back to find out why the conflict in Syria could tear open the volatile ethnic, sectarian and ideological fault lines that run through the region.
"This is Syria Street. On one side live Sunni Muslims who support the Syrian opposition, and on the other side live Alawites who support the Syrian government. Recently there were battles between them. Rockets were fired. Grenades were thrown. People died. Homes were destroyed. But I'm not in Syria. I'm in northern Lebanon."
"You're fixing your house because it was damaged in the fighting?"
"This is a lot of damage. That's quite a lot of damage."
"This room was totally devastated."
Ali Tata's home is on the frontline of the sectarian divide in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. The violence that destroyed his house in January is a snapshot of what many fear could sweep through the region if the crisis in Syria isn't resolved soon. It's a glimpse of a frightening scenario where sectarian and regional enemies fight out old battles. I'm Barbara Plett and in this BBC World Service Documentary, I'm finding out what's behind the war over Syria.
