        China’s expected next leader is defending his nation’s record on human rights but says there’s room for improvement. Vice President Xi Jinping said he had kind discussion on the issue with President Obama at the White House.
        President Obama is turning to the American people for help by asking them to push Congress to extend a payroll tax cut due to expire at the end of February.
        Authorities in Washington state recover some papers, books and a map Josh Powell dropped off at a recycling center a day before he killed his two young sons and himself in a fire. Powell was personally interested in his wife’s disappearance.
        Whitney Houston’s funeral is set for Saturday but it will be by invitation only, closed to the public. The service will in a church in Newark, New Jersey where she sang in a choir.
