The play adapted by John Logan is brought into the present and set in a Balkan location, actually Belgrade. Coriolanus has to contend not just with the Volscians, but the whole media circus that surrounds war and politics. It's a treatment that makes sense on screen, but all the same, Coriolanus as a play is a challenge. Until now, there's been no film. So why did Ralph Fiennes feel it was suitable for his first venture as director?
"I suppose Shakespeare's tragic protagonists - Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello - have a degree of awareness. Their language allows us to hear them, examine themselves to some degree. But Coriolanus has virtually nothing of that. He doesn't allow us in at all, really. And I like it for that reason. I mean he's an extremely austere, confrontational, rigid figure. And the play itself is quite confrontational, and it doesn't have, for want of a better word, lyricism or romanticism or anything you might call a love interest. And there's a war going on as well. The language of the play is dense, knotty, complex.
