答疑:lsy34When I started school around the age of four, I was the youngest in my class by about a month. That huge age difference combined with my ability at the time to spell a word as difficult as "electricity", e-l-e-c-t-r-i-c-i-t-y, before anyone else, convinced me that I was a prodigy. My classmates envied me. My teacher praised me. It felt good. Even before I knew the implications of the word "prodigy", I looked forward to a life of rich rewards, a certain amount of isolation from my peers, but grudging admiration from all.
But somewhere along the line, the opportunity was squandered. I got distracted. Maybe I spent far too much time playing with Mr Teddy, wanting sweets, or arguing with my mother over whether I needed to wear a coat outside or not. I didn't, by the way, everyone else was just wearing a T-shirt. Whatever I was doing, I wasn't focusing enough on the important things. I blamed my parents. They lacked ambition for me. Why did my father not practise golf with me from the age of three when all that important muscle memory should be learned? That's what Tiger Woods's father did. Obviously it was much later in life that Tiger learned how to be prodigious at other things, but that early will to succeed at golf, that early drive came from, well, those early drives.
My brain was never given the chance either. Mozart's father was a devoted music teacher to his son from the age of five. Mr Zukerberg paid for Mark to take private lessons in computer programming. My father would bring me for bicycle rides when I could have been inventing the Internet. It's practically neglect. I should have been trained by my parents from an early age. Yes I'm sure I would have resented them, but you can always have a second childhood later on when you're rich with all the sweets and Teddies you want. Whatever the reasons for my lack of world domination, now I fear it may be too late for me. You can't be precocious in your early 30s, unless you're very precocious at being elderly. At this stage, I can only be vicarious. That's why I've decided the only way to achieve true greatness is through someone else, to be precise, the next generation.
