It's January 28th, 1986, and Mission 51-L has just launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. On board are six astronauts and the first civilian to be chosen to go into space, a 37-year-old social studies teacher, Christa McAuliffe.
At the space centre, friends and family are watching the launch, including a group of 100 children from Christa's school in New Hampshire. Also watching is Christa's standby Barbara Morgan, a teacher from Idaho.
"I remember we were saying 'bye Christa, bye crew', and waving, and it got speed, and I'm so excited for you, I remember thinking, Gosh, I wish I were with you."
Seconds after takeoff, a small component on one of the solid rocket boosters fails. No one on board or at the control centre notices, and even if they had, there was nothing they could have done. There were no ejector seats and no way to switch off the shuttle's powerful engines.
Just over a minute into the flight, hot gas begins jetting out of a hole less than a centimetre in diameter, but it's enough to have a devastating effect.
