If you dream about sparring with Conan for ratings, check out this award at
Ball State University. Funnyman David Letterman started a telecommunications
scholarship for juniors and seniors at his Muncie, Ind., alma mater. Applicants
can submit a written, film or audio project to compete for a first prize of
$10,000. Since this award values creativity over academic achievement, there is
no grade-point-average (GPA) requirement。
Jerry Seinfeld
Available For: New York City public school seniors
If you're lucky enough to snag the competitive Seinfeld Family Foundation
scholarship, you'll have no need to fret over ballooning college costs. The
scholarship covers all unmet financial need, including tuition, books, room and
board and personal expenses for four years. The 2009 awards were open to
students from Brooklyn and Staten Island schools. Manhattan students can apply
for next year's scholarship in November. Applicants must demonstrate academic
achievement, financial need, creativity, leadership and community service。
Katie Holmes, Nigel Lythgoe, Adam Shankman and Carrie Ann Inaba
Available For: Dancers
If you can impress the likes of Alvin Ailey and Julliard, you might be able
to dance your way to scholarship dollars. Actress Katie Homes, television
producer Nigel Lythgoe, director Adam Shankman and Dancing With the Stars judge
Carrie Ann Inaba teamed up to found the Dizzy Feet Foundation in July. The
nonprofit will offer annual scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $7,500 to
talented dancers who can't afford to pursue education. Steering committee
members include Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus and the choreographers from Fox's So
You Think You Can Dance? competition. Camera crews will capture the popping,
locking and pirouette action for all to see on the Dizzy Feet Web site。
Kid Rock
Available For: Wayne State music majors
In October, rap-rocker and Detroit native Kid Rock partnered with Wayne
State University to help Motor City students pay for college. His Made In
Detroit Clothing Company designed a limited edition T-shirt, with all proceeds
going to the Kid Rock Music Scholarship。
Michael Jackson
Available For: United Negro College Fund member college students
Back in 1986, Michael Jackson donated $1.5 million to UNCF for a
scholarship endowment. Since then, 509 students have received Michael Jackson
Endowed scholarships worth an average of $4,000 per year. Applicants must be
enrolled at one of UNCF's member colleges with a major in English,
communications or performing arts. UNCF has awarded $1.8 million in Michael
Jackson scholarships to date, and the endowment's interest will continue to make
college more affordable for students for years to come。
Tiger Woods
Available For: Students with at least a 3.0 GPA
The golf pro may have missed the cut at the British Open, but he's still
No. 1 to scores of co-eds. His foundation's Earl D. Woods scholarships pay up to
$5,000 per year, and are renewable for up to four years. Students must have at
least a 3.0 GPA, community service experience and financial need. The program
currently serves students from California, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland
and Boston. Recipients also receive mentors and internships to help them through
their education。
Will.i.am
Available For: Students with financial need
Black Eyed Peas emcee Will.i.am announced his new I Am scholarship on
the
Oprah show in May. Four young men scored full scholarships, which cover
tuition, books and fees for four years at their colleges of choice. The
Scholarship America program is accepting donations to keep the program going for
