怎样用英文表达“大人物”

　　英文里表达“大人物”的词有很多，有些一眼能猜出，有些从字面上则很难判断，比如下面这句话： The old man is still a big
noise in island affairs, though he seldom comes into Miranda. 若从字面上讲，big noise
怎么也不会让人联想到“大人物”，而会让人想到噪音。这句话的中文意思是：那老家伙在岛屿事务中仍是个重要人物，尽管他很少到米兰岛来。
        　　其它说法还有：big cheese \big gun\big shot\big wheel\big wig\vip等。如John wanted to
be the big cheese in his club.(约翰想在他的俱乐部里当个大人物。)
        　　英文中还有一个词是whole cheese，但切不可想成big cheese的同义词。Whole
cheese的意思是以为自己是唯一一个重要人物，但事实并不一定如此，比如： You’re not the whole cheese just because
you got all the A’s。(别以为你门门功课都是五分就是唯五的重要人物)。
        　　Big frog 也有“大人物”的意思，但常和in a small
pond连用，意思是一个在某个小单位里颇有地位的人物，而到了大地方就显不出风光的人，比如： “As company president, he had been
a big frog in a small pond ,but he was not so important as a mew congressman in
Washington.
