实用英语：beat a retreat 打退堂鼓

　　两军短兵相接，如果情势不利，主帅随即鸣金(敲锣)收兵;西方人也以鼓声为军队进退的讯号，自18世纪以来，beat a
retreat就是表示交战时紧急撤退。
        　　来看这短语在日常生活中的用法：
        　　If dominance exists, I believe other investors will certainly "beat a
retreat". 如果垄断仍然存在，我相信其他投资者一定会打退堂鼓。
        　　When they see the teacher come, they beat a hasty retreat.
他们看到老师来了，就赶紧躲开。
        　　在中文里有这样的说法：某人一见事情不妙，就跑得比兔子还快。这“跑得比兔子还快”正是“beat a retreat”。例如： When the
burglars saw the police arriving they beat a hasty
retreat.(当那些撬门溜锁的看到警车到来，跑得比兔子还快。)
        　　另外，当众人都march to the drummer时表示步调一致，march to a different
drummer就表示步调不一了。
