1：abandon，leave，desert，discard：放弃
abandon: 强调感情上完全遗弃原来感兴趣或负责任的人或物，此行为并不一定会受到责备；
e.g.: He abandoned his girlfriend/hobby.
leave: 常指人舍弃某物，仅表示一个舍弃的动作，但不一定是完全舍弃；
e.g.: He left the car for walking.
desert: 常指抛弃某种关系，职位或忠诚等，含责备之义；
e.g.: He deserted his motherland and helped the enemy.
discard: 强调丢弃不需要的东西；
e.g.: discard the old clothes
2：academic，theoretical：理论上的
academic: 纯理论的，并无实际目的或意图；
e.g.: academic research
theoretical：关于或基于理论的，强调非实践（反义词：practical）；
e.g.: theoretical physics
3：academy，college，university，school，institute：学校，研究所
academy: 指“（高等）专科学校”，特指军事，艺术，体育学院或研究院。在美国，指提供特殊教育的学校，如私立中学高中或大学预科学校，尤指私立学校；这个词还有“学术团体，学术界”的意思；

a fine arts academy 美术学院
a military academy 军事学院
the Chinese Academy of Science 中国科学院
college: “高等教育机关，专科学校，学院”，指独立或大学中的一部分，多指农学院，药学院，音乐，医学，财经，师范学院等。英国也指大学预科专门学校。有时泛指任何类型的高等学校；

College of International Relations 国际关系学院
University: 指综合性大学高等教育机构，有时指这样一个机构的学生和教员的总称；

school: “学校”的总称；
institute: 指“学院，学会，研究所”，一般指专科大学，如音乐，艺术，舞蹈学院，也指理工类大学（如单一技术学校），也指外语或军事学院，研究所等；

Institute of Foreign Trade: 外贸学院
Petroleum Institute: 石油学院 |
