Air pollution in Beijing reaches hazardous levels
On Sunday, the Beijing municipal government issued a warning on its website for PM-2.5 readings. It’s the third day that air pollution in the city has reached dangerous levels. The public are advised to stay indoors and to avoid strenuous exercise.

Beijing’s air quality readings have reached dangerous levels for the third straight day. It’s the worst on record since the local government started collecting air pollution data a year ago.
According to real-time monitoring data from the environmental bureau, the density of PM 2.5 particulates exceeded 700 micrograms per cubic meter in many parts of the city, some even exceeded 900. The World Health Organization considers a safe daily level to be 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
Yu Jianhua, air quality control director from Beijing Municipal Environmental Bureau, said, "The temperature and humidity in Beijing have been rising over the last few days, which isn’t allowing the pollutants in the air to disperse. It’s caused the extreme haze in Beijing over the past three days."
PM 2.5 are tiny particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. They can penetrate deep into human lungs, causing severe health problems. Beijing’s air started to worsen on Thursday, and the local monitoring center says the haze is expected to linger until Tuesday.
