Buenos Aires holds bookshop night
Buenos Aires is known for its book stores. Once a year, the stores stay open all night to pay tribute to Argentina’s great writers and to celebrate the written word.

This is normally one of the busiest streets in the heart of Buenos Aires, packed with traffic and vibrating with noise. But tonight it’s been closed so that people can indulge in the more gentle pastime of simply reading a book.

Ernesto Mallo, writer, said, "They say all the time that each day we read less yet every day, each year we publish more than the previous year. What is changing is the way in which we read. People read more now with e-books, with computers and that kind of thing, but I don’t believe they read less."

In one bookshop they’re talking about romance novels, in another they’re celebrating great Argentine writers like Borges, Sabato and Ocampo while in this caf they’re highlighting Argentine crime novels.

He also said, "With a lot of effort, it’s now fashionable again. It seems as though people need to understand crime and for that they can’t rely on the media. Novels tell the truth."

This was the sixth annual Night of the Bookshops, with activities now spread across the city to entice the book buyers of the future, to keep established readers entertained and stimulated and to bring writers and their readers together.

Buenos Aires is a city with a rich literary tradition that loves its books. And this is a celebration that each year just gets bigger and bigger.
