China Art Museum to open on National Day in Shanghai
Organizers turning the old Expo China Pavilion into one of Asia’s biggest art museums in Shanghai are less than two weeks away from their opening day deadline.
Workers are racing against the clock to get more than 1,400 works of art positioned throughout the 60,000 square meters of exhibit space by their National Day deadline. The man in charge told ICS that they are doing fine and are expecting about 10,000 visitors a day when the museum officially opens on October 1st. He says the exhibits are the best of what the city has to offer in traditional and contemporary Chinese art.
Li Lei, deputy director of Prep. Office of China Art Museum, Shanghai, said, “The exhibits came from a number of major public art collectors including the Shanghai Art Museum, the Shanghai traditional Chinese Painting Institute as well as the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute. All of the works on display will be the best of the best.”
One visitor to the museum today said she’s happy to see masterpieces of some of her favorite artists including Chen Shifa, Xie Zhiliu, Wu Guanzhong and Lin Fengmian.
Li Yichun, visitor, said, "I’ve been to Taipei Museum, they have limited exhibition. I’ve also been to the Singapore Museum. They have a lot of collections of Wu Guanzhong’s pieces, but I’ve never seen that many number of like 7 artists here. I think the Maids are my personal favorites, because once you look at those paintings, you know it’s exactly from Lin Fengmian. Like for the eyes, he just used lines, it’s actually a very simple method, but it’s a combination of how Chinese people used water brush plus western people used oil painting."
Li says that after moving to Pudong from the Shanghai Art Museum on West Nanjing Road, the museum has continued its close cooperation with overseas counterparts including the British Museum and the Musee d’Orsay in Paris on exchanging items from each others’ collections. He says the museum will also have a gift shop and an education area for children to learn art. Admission to the permanent exhibits will be free, but Li says there will be a small charge for special short-term exhibits.
