McDonald’s may be a major Olympic sponsor, but would be remiss if they didn’t avail themselves of much more exotic fare. The streets outside the Games give the fast-food giant quite a run for its money. Thousands of street food vendors serve nearly every sort of fare you can imagine, from London to Lima.
London has a long tradition of street markets. According to the association of London markets, there are some 160 such locations across the capital today.
One of the most famous is the covered Borough Market near London Bridge on the South Bank. It traces its history back to 1014 when London Bridge was a key site for commerce with traders selling grain, fish and livestock to the people of London on the other side of the river Thames.
Today Phillip Crouch owns the Parma ham and mozzarella stall in the market - his business specialises in these two ingredients, fresh from Italy.
Phillip crouch, Vendor, Borough Market: "It makes a nice contrast to the meat in the bun brigade which you’ll see a lot of on the streets of London, so yes it’s quite classy."
This classic Lincolnshire sausage is made with pork shoulder, sage and seasoning with no additives or preservatives - all locally sourced and free-range.
Phillip crouch, Vendor, Borough Market: "I’d give street food a go definitely it’s a lot more enjoyable but you’re spoilt for choice somewhere like this."
On the other side of the river in Bohemian Camden Town is another market. One with a much more cosmopolitan flavour. Over a weekend, Camden’s market regularly attracts up to 100,000 visitors and hungry shoppers are likely to head to the Global Kitchen to satisfy their appetites.
Here you can find Spanish Tapas, New York style Macaroni and cheese, Peruvian marinated chicken served with a local wheat similar to cous-cous, and sausages from Poland. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth this French crepe stand serves up the thin pancakes with chocolate sauce and bananas.
Customer: "It’s just nice and easy and simple and you don’t have to worry about where you’re going and it’s just nice and simple."
Customer: "Delicious, it’s really fun walking around and trying loads of different foods from around the world."
