希拉里访印尼重视与伊斯兰国家关系
US Seeks To Bolster Links With Indonesia 2009年2月19日U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, seeking to reinvigorate Washington's ties to the Islamic world, said the Obama administration would develop relations with Indonesia as part of a U.S. diplomatic push in Southeast Asia.
Mrs. Clinton also said during her visit to Jakarta on Wednesday that the U.S. would work with regional leaders in creating mechanisms to address Asian issues, such as Myanmar's suppression of democracy activists.
The U.S. will seek common approaches with Southeast Asian nations to address the global economic crisis and environmental issues such as global warming and deforestation, the former first lady said.
'We believe the U.S. must have . . . a strong presence in this region,' Mrs. Clinton said after a meeting at the headquarters of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
On her first trip as Washington's chief diplomat, Mrs. Clinton started in Japan and made her second stop in Indonesia, home to the biggest Muslim population in the world.
The U.S. has cited Indonesia as a model for the Muslim world, due to its liberal democracy and successful efforts in confronting radical Islamic organizations.
U.S. President Barack Obama spent part of his youth in Jakarta and has spoken of his desire to build a closer U.S.-Indonesian partnership. Aides said he is considering Jakarta as a location to give a major address outlining Washington's relations with the Muslim world.
'I bring greetings from President Obama, who has himself said and written about the importance of his time here as a young boy,' Mrs. Clinton said after meeting Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda. 'It gave him an insight into not only this diverse and vibrant culture, but also the capacity for people with different backgrounds to live harmoniously together.'
Mrs. Clinton announced that Washington is working with Jakarta to re-establish a Peace Corps program in Indonesia that was frozen in the 1960s. The U.S. is also seeking to expand educational and scientific exchanges.
Mr. Wirajuda said his country could help the U.S. repair relations with Islamic countries strained by the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 'Indonesia can be a good partner for the U.S. to reach out to the Muslim world,' he said.
Many Southeast Asian diplomats expressed frustration in recent years that President George W. Bush's administration seemed to disengage from the region as it focused on the Middle East and building ties to China and India. Senior U.S. officials have been absent from gatherings such as the Asean Regional Forum in recent years.
'Your visit shows the seriousness of the U.S. to end its diplomatic isolation in the region,' Asean Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan told Mrs. Clinton.
Mrs. Clinton gave no date for Mr. Obama to visit the region. Mr. Wirajuda jokingly said Indonesia 'can't wait too long.'
The leader of Muhammadiyah -- a social and educational group that is Indonesia's second-largest Islamic organization -- told Indonesian news media that he declined an offer to join a dinner with Mrs. Clinton on Wednesday. Din Syamsuddin told reporters he didn't believe the event would engage in a serious debate on religious issues.
