Here are several of the top April Fool's Day pranks ever pulled off, as judged by the US Museum of Hoaxes website, for their absurdity and number of people duped.

In 1957, a BBC television show announced that thanks to a mild winter, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop.

This was accompanied by footage of farmers pulling strands of spaghetti from trees.

Huge numbers of viewers called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree.

To this the BBC replied, "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."

          2. Instant color TV

In 1962, there was only one TV channel in Sweden and it broadcast in black and white.

The station's technical expert appeared on the news to announce that, thanks to a new technology, viewers could convert their existing sets to display color reception.

All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their TV screen.

He proceeded to demonstrate the process.

Thousands of people were taken in.

The British newspaper the Guardian published a special seven-page supplement in 1977 about San Serriffe, a small republic said to consist of several semi-colon-shaped islands in the Indian Ocean.

A series of articles affectionately described the geography and culture of this obscure nation.

Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse.

The newspaper's phones rang all day as readers sought more information about the idyllic holiday spot.

The real "sans serif" is a form of type face.

Burger King, an American fast-food chain, published a full-page advertisement in USA Today in 1998 announcing the introduction of the "Left-Handed Whopper," specially designed for the 32 million left-

According to the advertisement, the new burger included the same ingredients as the original, but rotated 180 degrees.

The chain said it received thousands of requests for the new burger, as well as orders for the original "right-handed" version.

          5. Drunk Driving on the Internet

A 1994 article in PC Computing magazine described a bill going through Congress that would make it illegal to use the Internet while drunk, or to discuss sexual matters over a public network.

The bill was supposedly numbered 040194 , and the contact person was listed as Lirpa Sloof .

The article said that the FBI was going to use the bill to tap the phone line of anyone who "uses or abuses alcohol" while accessing the Internet.

Passage of the bill was felt to be certain because "Who wants to come out and support drunkenness and computer sex?"

The article generated so many angry phone calls to Congress that a senator had to release an official denial of the rumor that he was a sponsor of the bill.

          6. Flying penguins

The BBC announced in 2008 that camera crews filming near the Antarctic for its natural history series Miracles of Evolution had captured footage of penguins taking to the air.

It even offered a video clip of these flying penguins, which became one of the most viewed videos on the Internet.

The presenter explained that, instead of huddling together to endure the Antarctic winter, these penguins took to the air and flew thousands of miles to the rainforests of South America where they "spend the winter basking in the tropical sun".
