Gorgon, the Australian liquefied natural gas project which has a globally significant resource base estimated at 40,000bn cubic feet of natural gas, was officially given the green light on Monday when Chevron said it would proceed with the A$43bn development.
The milestone came nearly three decades after gas was discovered in the fields off the Western Australian coast and followed years of work to secure federal, state and environmental approvals in Australia.
Jim Blackwell, president of Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration and Production, said the first delivery of gas is expected to be shipped in 2014 from a processing facility that at its peak will supply 15m tonnes per annum of LNG.
“Gorgon will supply cleaner burning natural gas for the growing Asia Pacific and Australian markets,” he said. Over time, Gorgon is forecast to generate A$300bn of gas exports over 20 years and its sheer scale will curtail the development prospects for some of the other 27 LNG projects being considered in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
The gas project is one of the largest in the world and the biggest ever undertaken in Australia, a country that analysts believe could become be the dominant LNG supplier in little more than a decade.
Gorgon also refocuses the LNG gas industry on the Asia Pacific region as well as heralding a shake-up in the hierarchy of Asia's consumers that will see China replace Japan as the region's dominant LNG buyer.
Sales contracts for more than half of Gorgon's annual output of LNG have already been agreed with Chinese, Japanese, Indian and South Korean customers
