Asia In Cannes: Chongqing Blues The lone mainland China contender for the Palme d'Or this year is director Wang Xiaoshuai's poignant drama 'Chongqing Blues.' Taking as its starting point the death of a young man, the story explores personal and social changes in today's China.

'The film is about a father who goes on a quest in the city of Chongqing, trying to discover and understand who was his son,' says Isabelle Glachant, the movie's Beijing-based French producer. 'It's the unique vision of Wang Xiaoshuai on father-and-son relationships, on the development of China and of this visually amazing city of Chongqing.' That western Chinese metropolis, which served as the capital for Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government during World War II, today ranks as a megacity, with more than 31 million residents.

The 43-year-old Mr. Wang, one of the 'Sixth Generation' of Chinese filmmakers -- a group of directors who made their first films in the early 1990s and are known for gritty, contemporary works -- has won international critical acclaim for his finely crafted social commentaries. Several of his films had their premieres at Cannes, and in 2005 he won the Jury Prize there for 'Shanghai Dreams.'

A graduate of the prestigious Beijing Film Academy, Mr. Wang stands out as a noteworthy voice from China, whose film market, as in other countries, is dominated by commercial fare. But the economics of international independent cinema has changed, making distribution through movie theaters tougher. Being selected for competition at a festival like Cannes, Ms. Glachant says, can mean a world of difference for projects like 'Chongqing.' The exposure -- and perhaps a prize -- brings it to the attention of critics and distributors.

'The general public is always open to a Chinese story, as they are open to stories from around the world,' she says. 'You go see a film because you're looking for a voyage, for a discovery. You always hope that the audience will leave a theater full of the emotion of the story and of the characters. But also, that they will have discovered something, another aspect of China.'
