No engagement ring for Elizabeth Bennet not at least on Mr Darcy's first attempt. But Jane Austen fans are celebrating the fact that a golden turquoise ring once owned by the author may be allowed to stay in the UK. An American singer Kelly Clarkson bought the ring at auction last year for £150,000, but a temporary export ban imposed by the government has given the Jane Austen House Museum a chance to try to buy the ring themselves. £100,000 given today by an anonymous donor will help them on the way.
