And the next generation, the Raphaels, the Michelangelos, the Leonardos, they were the ones who were much more animated and excitable in the images that they'd made and they made Piero look rather too quiet, almost stolid.
It was that very quality of stillness, where nothing much seems to be happening, that led to the rapid decline in admiration for paintings like The Resurrection. Piero's masterpiece was seen as a work of no value and little interest. And in the 18th century its fortunes went into free-fall - the fresco was wiped out.
