It's a huge painted, wooden crucifixion, made in the 9th century, called the "Holy Face". The Christ figure here has the same deep, penetrating eyes that can be seen in The Resurrection. But in painting his eyes of Christ, Piero, a man of his time, has added the fine detail of new observation.
When you look at Christ's eyes the first thing that you see is that the lids are quite droopy, overlaying the pupils and that they're slightly uneven, there is more white below this eye than its opposite. But then you realise also that there is a kind of ghost form up above the brows that are mere outlines, through which you can see his skin and yet they seem to stand away from the face adding yet another layer before the face, calling you into the depth of his glance and making it impossible for you to look away.
