His contemporaries complained about that. This is rare for renaissance works. Normally they knew how to make the painting, so they would survive.
The Last Supper was rotting, mould started to grow on it, and soon it covered the entire surface. Curtains were hung over it when the humid sirocco wind blew, but still, damp ran down it like rain, and friars had to climb ladders to sponge it dry. And soon, to the damage caused by nature was added damage caused by man.
At the end of the 18th century, Milan fell to Napoleon's armies. The French troops, not noted respecters of religion and its trappings, used the refectory as a stable and a meal store. They scratched the apostles' eyes out with daggers and hurled stones of the figures, destroying the lovingly painted gowns.
