The painting by now really was a ruin. But when early artistic tourists found a way back into the abandoned monastery, they discovered an image that held a surprising appeal.
I think looking at the Last Supper, there is this romance of the patina and the damage. It's a bit like listening to a kind of ancient blues record or a historic conductor and hearing all the crackle and if we'd seen it in the original, I suspect that the sheer colouristic vitality, the crispness, the sharpness of it would have been very surprising, that we somehow quite like this. This aged, battered appearance. it has a certain kind of romance to it.
It came close to being the romance of death. The Last Supper was now so fragile that even touching the wall beneath it caused its paint to fall away.
