Iran was one of the first countries in the Middle East to allow women to study at university. And since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, it's made big efforts to encourage more girls to enroll in higher education and as a result, female students are now a significant majority. But in August, the government introduced new rules banning female students from almost 80 degree courses at more than 30 universities. The government offered no explanation, nor is there one to be found in the list of banned courses which includes subjects as diverse as engineering, nuclear physics, English literature, archaeology and business.
Sara is an Iranian student who didn't want us to use her name. She did her undergraduate degree in Iran in physics and is now doing postgraduate studies in mechanical engineering here in the UK. Had she been encouraged to go on to higher education?
"It really depends on the type of family you're from. But I'm general. We were encouraged at school and by the teachers and by the system to go to university and to study and go for the higher education. There were not much restriction to the field of study that we could choose."
