Here in the UK, it's illegal to smoke inside. So instead, smokers gather outside pubs like this one to puff away. We all know that smoking cigarettes is bad for our health, so the growing popularity of the electronic cigarette might seem to be the answer. They offer a way to get nicotine and enjoy smoking but without the health hazards of burning tobacco. I'm Lorna Stewart, and in this edition of Discovery, I'll be asking if they're really the solution to the global smoking crisis.
I think without doubt, e-cigarettes present a huge opportunity. Some of my colleagues actually believe that e-cigarettes could see the death of the conventional cigarette. We could be seeing the end of the tobacco epidemic.
Professor Robert West is director of the tobacco research group at University College London.
When you consider that currently 5 million people worldwide are being killed by tobacco, and this is rising rapidly so that, you know, this is like a world war every year. It's a massive death toll. The price is huge. It could be the single most important public health gain this century.
