There was a long history of conflict between the Italian city states. Florence was almost perennially at war with one city-state or another. And, by the same token, almost perennially in alliance with one city state or another. So, you put a pin into the calendar and you can come up with a very different permutation of allies and enemies as you might do ten years later.
As the 1430s began, Florence found itself embroiled in yet another war against a rival city state Lucca and her allies, Sienna and Milan. But finding people to fight the war was proving a difficult task for the rulers of Florence.
Part of what we now know is that the Renaissance is the replacement of military service or military duty with capital and other forms of labour. So I mean there was literally nobody in any of the communes left to fight really on behalf of that commune. There were citizen militias but they were badly trained. They were very lazy. They got bored on the watch. They fell asleep. They would rather be working in the family bank, or whatever. |
