Uccello's great panels were painted in Florence, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance. But they were created long before the most famous images of the Renaissance had come into being. It was a time, none the less when art was burgeoning in an unprecedented way in the city state.
The 1430s may well have been one of the most exciting times in the history of Florentine art. Never since antiquity have people been so inventive. Artists were experimenting, and were talking to the people who wanted art, who in themselves talking about the meaning of art. So at every level of thought and practice, there is a buzz around.
But hand in hand with the artistic explosion in Florence came a less welcome feature of the city's growing self-confidence. |
