Each of the three paintings is a substantial object, over ten feet wide and six feet high. Constructed of poplar wood, originally an inch thick, they were never designed to be moved. The artist certainly pulled out all the stops. At the start of their life the paintings would have been found in one grand room in all their glory. Glowing in candlelight with burnished gold and silver and vibrant colour, their scale, style and sheer accomplishment would have taken the breath away.
There is a strong cinematic feel to these paintings. When you're standing in front of them it's almost as if you are staring at some wide screen portrayal in the cinema of a battle scene mounted at great expense by a Hollywood movie maker. |
