BP agrees $4.5bn Gulf spill settlement
BPhas agreed to a $4.5bn settlement to resolve criminal chargesrelating to the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, but the UK group stillfaces civil claims from the US government.

The company pleaded guilty to 14 criminal charges brought by the Department of Justice, 11 ofwhich were counts of manslaughter. As part of the $4bn settlement relating to those charges, BPis paying a fine of $1.256bn, the largest financial penalty ever imposed by US authorities. It is alsopaying a further $525m for civil fraud charges brought by the Securities and ExchangeCommission, the financial regulator.

Bob Dudley, BP’s chief executive, said: “We apologize for our role in the accident, and as today’sresolution with the US government further reflects, we have accepted responsibility for ouractions.”

The settlement marks another step forward for the company as it attempts to resolve its liabilitiesover the 2010 disaster. The payments raise BP’s estimated spill costs by $3.85bn to $42bn.

However, it still faces actions for civil penalties and damages from federal, state and local authoritiesin a case scheduled to go to trial in February.

BP had hoped to resolve all civil and criminal actions in the one case, but the talks have beencomplicated by disagreements among the various governments over how a settlement should beshared out.

The charges filed yesterday include 12 felonies: 11 counts of negligence-related manslaughter forthe deaths of the men killed on the rig and one count of obstruction of Congress for not revealingfull details of the estimated size of the spill.
