The sincerest form of flattery
Where does inspiration end and imitation begin? Is it a sign of respect to recycle another designer's style, or the reverse?
Depends on whether you're the copier or the copied.
Leaving aside high street labels copying high end collections, designers have a great fondness for "paying homage", or
"channelling", to use the common lingo, one another's styles.
Marc Jacobs has made a career out of taking styles from the past and, depending on one's age and perspective, modernising
them or watering them down for the Paris Hilton generation.
His fondness for quilted bags and flat round-toed shoes all suggest a deep fondness for Chanel, while his dress made out of
cut-out chiffon hearts for a collection earlier for this year was an obvious reference to Yves Saint Laurent. As such, the
dress was feted by various magazines as being a wonderful homage and a great demonstration of fashion knowledge on the part
of Jacobs; Saint Laurent, being recently deceased, was sadly unavailable for comment.
It comes down to the simple point that ideas get repeated, and good ideas deserve to. After all, there are only so many
things one can do with a pair of trousers. |
