the west of Xining, the provincial capital of Qinghai, is China's largest
saltwater lake, with an area of 4,317 square kilometers and 25.5 meters
underwater at the deepest point. 23 rivers meet there, most of which are
seasonal rivers. 80% of its water originates from five major rivers. Qinghai
Lake is the intersection of several routes across Asia that birds of passage
take. Many of them take Qinghai Lake as a temporary habitat in the process of
migration. The famous "birds island" sits at its west side, which attracts
birdwatchers from all over the world. Every summer, tourists also meet therefor
the international cycling competition.
