  The year’s notable fiction, poetry and nonfiction, selected by the editors
of The New York Times Book Review.

          1. GRIEF IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS. By Max Porter. A father and his sons
struggle with a death in this luminous novel.

          2. LAROSE. By Louise Erdrich. A man who accidentally killed his best
