First though, Steve Jobs, the new film by director Danny Boyle with Michael Fassbender as the polonecked Californian who led the drive to make the computer personal and the phone smart for millions of consumers. The screenplay is by Aaron Sorkin who kept the White House walking and talking through the West Wing TV series which he created. For the big screen, his last film was the Social Network about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. So he's familiar with the challenge of depicting real people and the apparently uncinematic concepts of the digital age. His source for much of the material about Steve Jobs in Apple was Walter Isaacson's biography. But Sorkin made a bold dramatic decision to make this not a comprehensive biopic, but a period drama in three acts, focusing on three episodes, tense moments leading up to three crucial product launches in the 80s and 90s when ambitions and conflicts come to the surface, like this challenge to Steve Jobs from the CEO of Apple, John Sculley. The drama comes from exchanges between Jobs and among others, his colleague and confidant Joanna Hoffman played by Kate Winslet and his sometime collaborator Steve Wozniak, Seth Rogen. It makes for a talky, nervy film, especially at the outset. I asked writer Aaron Sorkin for his reasoning behind the unusual structure.
"Before I knew what I wanted to do, I knew what I didn't wanna do, and that was to write a biopic, a straight cradle-to-grave story where we hit on the characters' greatest hits along the way where Steve meets Woz and let's start a company in my garage or make the MAC and here's the iPhone, that kind of thing."
