And the football first, with suspended FIFA President Sepp Blatter suggesting there was an agreement in place for Russia to host the 2018 World Cup before the vote to decide the venue took place. Whether even when taking into account these suspensions and scandals hitting FIFA, our sports news correspondent Richard Conway says this is an eye-opening interview from the Swiss.
I think it's an astonishing admission by Sepp Blatter. Think back to December of 2010 when, of course, England were in the running to try and host the 2018 World Cup. Spain and Portugal were in there, Holland and Belgium too. What Sepp Blatter is saying here, in this interview, is that it was pre-ordained, that it was already decided before that vote that 2018 will go to Russia and that USA will get 2022. But of course, it didn't quite go to plan for him because Qatar came in and took 2022. He says that's because Michel Platini was influenced by the French government. It is a remarkable admission, you know, questions about why now, why is he saying these things, why is he coming out with this? Again, we have to remember he is facing criminal proceedings; he's facing the possibility of being banned from football for many years, possibly within the next few weeks. It seems that he could be settling some old scores here. |
