                The city-state is marking its 50th anniversary this year, and the celebrations are expected to be on a grander scale than anything it's ever seen before. But this year, the National Day celebrations have taken on even more importance after the death of Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan-Yew in March. Mr Lee was widely seen as the architect of modern Singapore, turning it from a colonial outpost into the Asian success story it is today. But critics of his style say that Singapore's economic growth has been built on strong political control. So what are the challenges it faces ahead? Sharanjit Leyl reports.
               
                I'm walking along the mouth of this Singapore river which is flanked by skyscrapers within which are some of the world's largest banks and multinational companies. It's a dense urban jungle, but new gleaming buildings are continually being built, adding to its already glamourous skyline. By all accounts, this is a city that's made it. Singapore has among the world's wealthiest population per capita. According to the World Bank, wealth here breaks down to over $50,000 per individual. But it wasn't like this 50 years ago.
