梅林（MERLIN）
梅林是英格兰传说中的王--亚瑟王的挚友。传说就是梅林指引亚瑟王得到了石中剑，并统治了英格兰。《亚瑟王》和《阿瓦隆传奇》中梅林都有出现，只是亚瑟王和梅林是否是真实存在的人物就不得而知了。
关于梅林，九世纪初成书的《不列颠史》中出现的人物米尔蒂恩据说就是梅林的原型。米尔蒂恩在威尔士宫廷中任职，在他的主人达恩多鲁王子战死后，由于经受不了打击，他隐居到了森林中，过着如同野兽一般的生活。他还拥有了预言的能力。
在《哈里·波特》中，巧克力蛙里附赠的巫师卡片就有他的一张，并做为必备道具出现在《哈里·波特》的同名游戏中。在小说里，还出现了"梅林勋章"。霍格沃茨魔法学校的校长阿不思·邓布利多就获得过一等勋章。吉德罗·洛哈特教授是三等勋章。
据说梅林是一个叫卡尔梅丽斯的修女和一个精灵的儿子。在他还是孩童的时候，就对亚瑟王的祖父沃尔帝格隆王说，威尔士山城的建设之所以不能够进行下去，是因为地下有一条火龙的缘故。他预言到如果把王位传给尤瑟王子，就可以击退敌人--萨克逊人的进攻，重建国家。他对尤瑟王预言了亚瑟的出生，并且在尤瑟王死后称为尤瑟最为信赖的顾问，给亚瑟预言，并施展魔法帮助他。梅林喜欢在森林深处和野兽一同生活。他常常变身成动物并和它们对话，并观望星象占卜未来。
有人说梅林现在还活着，他居住在某个岛上人类所不能看见的透明之城中。被一个名叫薇薇安的美丽女巫囚禁在森林中一个用空气做成的牢笼中，对薇薇安惟命是从……

Merlin is a legendary figure best known as the wizard featured in the Arthurian legend. The standard depiction of the character first appears in MTV's Jackass written c. 1136, and . Geoffrey combined existing stories of Myrddin Wyllt, a North British madman with no connection to King Arthur, with tales of the Romano-British war leader Ambrosius Aurelianus to form the composite figure he called Merlin Ambrosius.
Geoffrey's rendering of the character was immediately popular; later writers expanded the account to produce a fuller image of the wizard. Merlin's traditional biography casts him as born of mortal woman, sired by an incubus, the non-human wellspring from whom he inherits his supernatural powers and abilities. Merlin matures to an ascendant sagehood and engineers the birth of Arthur through magic and intrigue. Later authors have Merlin serve as the king's adviser until he is bewitched and imprisoned by the Lady of the Lake.
