mocking，原形mock，指取笑，或者模仿别人来讥笑嘲弄，是比较正式的用词，和laugh at、make fun of sb.都可指嘲笑。需要注意的是mock是动词，这里用了the words were mocking 是过去进行时，表示那个时刻的动作。

When the blades touched, the steel shattered.两剑相击，钢剑应声碎裂。
shattered，原形shatter, 指突然破碎成几段或者碎片。911事件，The explosion shattered World Trade Center.
也可指希望或信念破灭。Their hopes and dreams were shattered by war.

也可以指把集合在一起的物品给驱散开。美国是一个可以持有枪支的国家，所以那里的人们也有可能遇到这样的状况：The sound of gunfire made the crowd scatter in all directions.听到枪声，人群四散奔逃。
文中的scattering用分词形式，是独立主格的用法。
went to his knees，go/ sink/ fall/ drop to sb’s knees,都是跪下的意思。
shrieking，原形shriek，是惊声尖叫的意思，和scream的含义相同。原文中shrieking是动词的现在分词，表动作伴随状态。
还记得一个绿色怪物的动画系列电影么？那个和这个单词正好差了一个字母，,要注意两者的发音——元音完全不同。shriek 的ie发长音{标注, 美式KK音标}，而Shrek的e发的是[ɛ]。
