Emmy-winning "The West Wing" creator and Syracuse University alumnus Aaron Sorkin returns to TV with a new drama, "The Newsroom," on HBO. The fast-paced, behind-the-scenes look at a nightly news production premiered Sunday night with a well-rounded cast that includes Jeff Daniels (as Will McAvoy, "the Jay Leno of news anchors"), Emily Mortimer (as his ex-girlfriend and new executive producer MacKenzie McHale) and Sam Waterston (as the slightly alcoholic cable-news-division president Charlie Skinner).
The first episode of "The Newsroom," titled "Because We Decided To," sets the scene for the series and establishes some supporting cast members like Alison Pill (as Maggie, er, Margaret, er, "Ellen") and "Slumdog Millionaire" star Dev Patel (as McAvoy's blog writer Neal). McAvoy's staff has left after his public rant about whether America is the greatest country in the world went viral, forcing a new team of producers to join him on the night one of 2010's biggest stories broke: the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

《新闻编辑室》的故事发生在一个虚构的电视台ACN里，主人公威尔·麦克阿里斯特是一家有线电视网黄金档新闻节目的主播，在前任领导调职之后，被安排到一档新的夜间节目任职，并需要和陌生的节目制片人合作，也使得直播室的人际关系错综复杂。该剧第一季计划制作10集，每集都以一个真实的新闻事件为切入口，探讨个个媒体人在这些事件面前的态度、私生活等问题以及主观倾向性与新闻报道之间的关联。第一集就选择了2010年突发的墨西哥湾漏油事件。
对于该剧，北美31家媒体除了一个满分、一个零分，平均只有57分。评论界对其表现毁誉参半，优点是“对白呈现出巨大的信息量，看得人激情澎湃。”而缺点则是“说教味太浓”。看起来这是一部令人很矛盾的剧集，还需要继续观察。
