Mental health charities have called on Simon Cowell and ITV to urgently reevaluate how they pick contestants, after a man with a history of severe mental health problems was jeered on a TV talent show.

Experts warned a tragedy was inevitable unless show producers stopped vulnerable people from performing.

It follows criticism from a contestant who appeared on Britain's Got Talent. Alyn James, a retired dentist from South Wales, was buzzed off before he could finish his self-penned song.

Mr James, who had told show producers he had been judged at serious risk of suicide and sectioned seven times, was booed by the live audience.

The crowd repeatedly shouted " off, off, off" during his tune. Amanda Holden described his attempt as "ever so depressing."

The head of the Mental Health Foundation, Andrew McCulloch, said: "Offering vulnerable people up to be laughed at is deeply offensive."

"It is far beyond any ethical boundaries. Inevitably if enough people are subjected to enough stress, someone will end up taking their life."

Mr James said he felt let down by the show's producers, who allowed him to go on the show.
