一、课文阅读练习
'Whatever are you doing up here Bill?' asked the vicar in surprise.
'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill.' I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.'
'You certainly did give me a surprise!'said the vicar. 'You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.'
'That's the trouble, vicar," answered Bill. 'It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing 1 can do about it.'
'We’ll get used to that Bill,'said the vicar. 'Thirteen is not as good as one but it's better than nothing. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.'

- Equal adj.
eg：He is convinced that we are all equal in front of the law despite our differences.
他深信虽然我们有不同之处，但在法律面前我们是平等的。
According to an old lady who could not bear或tolerate discrimination against women, during that period of time, women demanded equal pay for equal work.
据一位无法忍受对妇女的歧视的老太太说，在那个时期，妇女要求同工同酬。
- 词组：A be equal to B 表示前者能胜任后者，能比得上后者
eg：Despite his great age, he is equal to this task. 虽然他年纪大，他能胜任这项任务。
- Equal Verb.等于
- 词组：A equal B in+某方面
eg：No one can equal her in beauty. 没有人能与她比美。
三、趣味翻译
英：Her beauty is equaled by her stupidity.
中：她有多美，她就有多蠢。
中：他有多帅， 他就有多二
英：His handsomeness is equaled by his stupidity/foolishness.
中：他有多帅, 他就有多聪明
英：His handsomeness is equaled by his wisdom或by his intelligence.
