By no means is memorable except perhaps for its casting is "The Family", an English language comedy from another French director Luc Besson, hereof "Subway", "Nikita" and "Léon", and other stylish underworld adventures. This time his subject is the mob, and a New York Italian-American family hiding out in a witness protection programme, in a picturesque town in France. Robert De Niro is the displaced patriarch, Michelle Pfeiffer plays his wife and there are two teenage children, acute cultural differences, random acts of inappropriate violence, and general incongruity. Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer in destructive suburban form in "The Family". It's a film of many parts and moods not many of them successful. But there is one neat conceit that takes De Niro's character to a local film society showing of Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas", where as an American, he's invited to comment on that film's narrative. In case you've forgotten, it's about former mobster Henry Hill who turned prosecution witness. De Niro's own association with Scorsese goes back 40 years to "Mean Streets", and they're planning to work together again on "The Irishman" in which a hitman reflects on his mob past. When I met Robert De Niro with Michelle Pfeiffer, he explained that that aspect was what drew him to "The Family".
This whole thing was interesting to me because of a "Goodfellas" stuff, I thought that was all like interesting and fun, and who knows where we go. But you know it's okay. The only thing I had to concern about was the accuracy, and the focus of that part of it. So I looked at the movie again. I looked at, they had a lot of interviews with Henry Hill on certain, things that I had never even seen in the DVD.
